Methods by which the authoritative forms of the names, subjects, geographic entities, and uniform titles used as headings in any file of bibliographic records are established, and consistently applied and maintained as new records and terms are added. As the size of databases increase, technology improves, and libraries practice the global exchange of data, there are efforts to expand the terms that are controlled by authoritative lists and linking these various lists, thesauri, and vocabularies. In online databases, authority control may be provided by a fee-based commercial service.
