Citation indexes allow users to search forward in time from a known article to more recent publications which cite the known item. Citation indexes of scholarly publications include ISI's Web of Science, NASA's Astrophysics Data System, eprints.org, and the NEC Research Institute's ResearchIndex.

Citation indexes are very useful in gathering data for citation analysis.
