A publication that gives definitions of words. Works with more detailed entries are called encyclopedias.

A book of words in a language, arranged alphabetically, which provides information about spelling, meaning, etymology (origins), function, pronunciation, etc. A pictorial dictionary includes illustrations of the objects represented by the words listed.

Some dictionaries are specialized. Examples:
