A fanciful story, usually written for or told to children, which contains a supernatural element affecting adults and children, animals, and inanimate objects. Most fairy tales are based on the traditional folklore of a specific culture. Some fairy tales are didactic (examples: Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs). In most libraries, fairy tales are shelved in the juvenile collection.
