- An alphabetically arranged list of names, places, and topics treated in a printed work which gives the page number(s) on which each topic is discussed. Usually located at the end of a book, or in the last volume of a multi-volume work.
- More broadly, a finding-guide to the contents of published material in a library collection, or in a specific field of research, such as a periodical index.
