A global connection of computers used to share and transfer information; the fiber-optic computer network which connects computers all over the world, enabling computer users to communicate via e-mail, find information on the World Wide Web, and access remote computer systems such as library catalogs. The Internet began as a project of the U.S. Department of Defense and now has hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
