An internal department responsible for acquiring materials for the library's collection; the department within a library which is responsible for ordering and purchasing new materials. In smaller libraries, the acquisitions librarian may also be responsible for collection development.

Acquisitions duties include the processing of purchase recommendations from library selectors, bibliographers, and patrons; negotiating with publishers and vendors; ordering additions for the collection; and receiving new materials (including purchases as well as gift books).

The acquisitions department also monitors the acquisitions budget and works closely with other collection management units such as cataloging.
