The Digital Video Disc is a popular format for motion pictures. Other library materials, such as computer data and program files, may also come in DVD format.
Libraries collecting DVDs raises many questions and issues, including:
- The need or desire for DVD players and DVD computer drives in the library
- Security to prevent theft of discs
- Legal issues regarding the loaning of copyrighted and/or licensed computer files
- Format choices (not just choosing DVD over CD-ROM or VHS, but forming a policy on selecting the widescreen or fullscreen version of a film)
- Competition with video stores and philosophical debates over collection development issues
- Assessing service charges for DVD circulation
