A library director is a person who has overall responsibility for supervising the operation of a library or library system.

In libraries that have faculty status for academic librarians, the director may be called Dean or Provost. Smaller institutions may use titles such as "Librarian of the College" or "College Librarian." Other synonyms include "Head Librarian," "City Librarian," or "Branch Manager" in a branch library system.

An academic library director may report to a college or university president/chancellor, or an intermediate position such as a Chief Information Officer, Provost, or Vice Chancellor. A public library director often reports to an elected municipal government official, such as a mayor or county supervisor, and may also be governed by a Board of Trustees.

Although many library directors hold doctorates, in some cases, such as with the current head of the Library of Congress, they may not possess a library degree.
