K. C. Panda (born 11 March 1952) is a distinguished librarian and professor in India.

Early life and career[edit]

Krushna Chandra Panda was born on 11 March 1952 in village Alladigam in Ganjam District (Orissa) having the opportunity of being the third son of an ex-army personnel Late Mr. Govinda Chandra Panda, has had a distinguished career in LIS and was awarded Utkal University’s Gold Medal for securing first rank in MLISc Examination, 1984. Panda has had served as Librarian in Pulp and Paper Research Institute (1982-83) and Asst. Librarian in the Berhampur University Central Library (1986-92) and has been engaged in Post-Graduate teaching since 1992. He is currently working as Professor and Head, and Chairperson,BoS P.G. Dept. of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur University where he is teaching Information Technology, Research Methodology and Sociology of Librarianship.

Overseas visit and internship[edit]

Panda was awarded the prestigious US Fulbright Fellowship in 1990 and visited USA and Canada. During his stay in USA, he attended a Pre-Academic Orientation Course at Stanford University, California and audited three courses on Information Technology at SIS & P, State University of New York at Albany and also received senior-level library internship in the several US libraries of repute including Library of Congress, New York State Public Library, RPI Library at Troy, and SUNY-OCLC Regional Center at Albany. Publications[edit]

Panda is the author of 109 research papers in the field of Library and Information Science published in different journals of repute including 06 in foreign journals. Besides, he has published 20 popular articles and authored 05 books, and has reviewed 02 foreign books-one on Canadian Literacy Thesaurus and the other on ILL of Alternative Format Materials. The books authored/edited by him include:

  • New Dimensions in Information Science & Technology (1993) by Parimal Publications
  • Some Miens of Modern Librarianship (1994) by Ajanta Publications
  • IT on the Cross’road: From Ab’caus to Internet (1999) by Y.K. Publisher
  • Information Science and Journalism: A Symbiosis (2004) by Rawat Publications
  • Status of State Central Libraries in India: An Analytical Study (2003) published by Gyan Publishing House, which brought him recognition.

Research[edit]

Panda, as a successful researcher, has already produced 12 (twelve) Ph.Ds under his supervision and four more theses have been submitted for adjudication and six more scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral research under his guidance. He has attained the credit of being recognized as a Research Supervisor of Utkal University, Sambalpur University, Berhampur University, and H.S. Gour Viswa Vidyalaya of Sagar (MP). Panda has successfully guided 10 M.Phil level and 41 Master Level dissertations in L & IS.

Memberships[edit]

Panda is an active Member of Several leading Professional Associations, namely, IIPA, ILA, IASLIC, IATLIS, SIS (Orissa Chapter) and Past Member of ALA, IFLA, and ASIS and was the former Member of State Library Planning Committee, Orissa (1992-94), Executive Council of IASLIC (1994-95) and former Vice-President of ILA (2002-04). Panda’s biography has been enlisted in 10 leading International Biographical tools. He has delivered a series of lectures on different aspects of modern librarianship on invitation from different universities in India including UGC Visiting Fellow at Vikram University, Ujjain (2002) and joined as Visiting Faculty at H. S. Gour Viswa Vidyalaya, Sagar, under Exchange of Teachers Programmes of UGC (Dec. ‘2006). Besides, he is the former Course Writer and Counsellor of IGNOU, Kurukshetra University and Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur.

Panda has been actively associated with the academic and administrative affairs of different universities in the country. He is the Chairman of Board of Studies in Library and Information Science of Sambalpur University and North Orissa University (2006-07), Asst. Superintendent of P.G. Hostel (1994-98 & 2002-04), Programme Officer, NSS (1997-98), Course Coordinator of PGDJ & MC (1998-99), Associate Vice-President of Horizon (2001-02), Dy Coordinator, UGC-DRS-SAP Program (2005-07), Member, Senate, Sambalpur University (2001-04), Member, Secretary, UGC-AAAC Committee (2006-07), Member, Executive Committee, G.M. (Autonomous) College (2003-04), Member, University Regulation Advisory Committee (2004-06).

Honours and awards[edit]

He was honoured with several awards and medals such as Utkal University Gold Medal (1983-84), US Fulbright Fellowship (1990-91), ILA Promoter Award (2002), Certificate of Honour by IASLIC (2006) and several others.
