The blank space around the printed or written material on a page. The four margins of a page are known as the top or head; the bottom, foot, or tail; the outside, outer, or fore-edge; and the inside, inner, or back. The combined inside margins of facing pages are known as the gutter. The relationship of the widths of the four margins is an important element in the proportions of a well-designed page. Standard proportions are: bottom margin double the top and inside margin 1/2 or 2/3 of the outside.
