An honor awarded annually since 1922 under the auspices of the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished children's book published in the United States during the previous year. Donated by the family of Frederic G. Melcher, the medal is named after John Newbery (1713-1767), the British publisher who first published books specifically for children.
