Trial impressions made from metal type, plates, photographic film, or magnetic tape or disk, for inspection and correction at the various stages of composition. Proofs of textual matter are known as proof sheets. During the process of printing a book, there may be several kinds and stages of proofs, each designated according to form (example: galley proofs) and purpose or destination ( author's proof, artist's proof, etc.).
