A person or corporate body which prepares and issues printed or nonprint material for public distribution or sale in the marketplace. In older books, the publisher and printer were often the same, but in modern publishing this is usually not the case. A directory of U.S. publishers is available in the reference section of most libraries--it is one of the volumes of Books in Print ( BIP).
