Special collections

Jump to: navigation, search

Special collections are generally housed in separate sections of a library and include rare, older, or valuable materials. Sometimes kept in closed stacks.

Some libraries maintain a separate section for rare books, manuscripts, personal papers, and other items which are of a certain form, on a certain subject, of a certain time period or geographical area, fragile, or especially valuable. These items are usually non-circulating and access to them may be by appointment only.
