Special libraries

From LISWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

A library established and supported by a commercial firm, private association, government agency, or special interest group to meet the information needs of its employees, members, or staff in accordance with the organization's mission. The scope of the collection is usually limited to the interests of the parent organization.

Special libraries are generally found in places not traditionally thought of as libraries. They can include libraries found in law firms, large corporations, prisons, hospitals and newspapers. Special libraries can also include information centers or professionals involved in political groups, not-for-profit organizations, museums and trade and scientific associations.

The Special Libraries Association represents the interests of thousands of information professionals in over eighty countries worldwide.
