The right granted by a publisher to receive a periodical for a fixed period of time, or for a fixed number of issues, in exchange for payment of a fixed sum in advance. Potential subscribers may be offered a heavily discounted subscription price as an inducement to subscribe.
Most print subscriptions are delivered by mail and renewed annually. Many library subscriptions are now to databases and electronic journals.
