The cover of a printed publication is the outer layer which serves to protect its pages. Books bound in cloth or leather over boards are said to be published in hardcover. Books bound in softcover are called paperbacks. Periodicals are almost always issued in paper covers.
Hardcover books may also have a secondary covering called a dust jacket.
