Prose literary works which portray imaginary characters and events. In historical fiction the characters and events usually bear some relationship to what actually happened, but any dialog is the product of the author's imagination. In the Western tradition, the forms of literary fiction include the novel, the novelette, and the short story. Compare with nonfiction.

In libraries which use Library of Congress classification, fiction is shelved in the P's in the circulating collection and it is usually necessary to use the online catalog to look up the call number of an item in order to locate it in the stacks. In libraries which use Dewey Decimal classification, fiction is usually shelved separately from nonfiction, alphabetically by the last name of the author.
