The papyrus scroll used in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, with the text written in columns and the lines running parallel with the length of the roll. The first and last sheets were probably rolled around a straight stick with knobbed ends. The scrolls were stored in boxes or on deep shelves with a vellum labels attached to the ends for identification by title.
